With the Black Widows' unexpected loss to the Cigar City Mafia last month, the Tampa Bay Derby Darlins' were thrown for a tizzy. The Widows lost? What else had come undone since the season started? Was up now down? Left right? Right wrong? After a month of vigorous research it was deemed another match would be needed between the Cigar City Mafia and the Switchblade Sisters in order to properly schedule a Championship bout. The Mafia had trounced the Sisters in their last match-up, Are You There Blocker, It's Me, Jammer..., (196-95), but that was three months ago! Things had clearly changed since then.

On Saturday, July 30, the Darlins' Summer Jam at Crowbar in Ybor was a wild success, entertaining and financially rewarding! Kitty Danger and her committee of helpers did an excellent job organizing an evening full of events. The entertainment was kicked off with the energetic punk sounds of Neglected Superhero, which helped get the party started. Amberly Drive's final show in Tampa included a selection of originals mixed with crowd-pleasing covers. The bands then took a turn to more chill, jam/funk sounds with Wake Up Frank and Green Sunshine.

During the all the music and in between sets, the crowd could be observed playing Derby Bingo, with team cards created by Sasha Haughtbich, encouraging fans to meet Darlins and win raffle tickets. A few lucky Darlins won a raffle prize, including Mary Rotten...but everyone was a winner when we got to watch Spank Sinatra model the La France donated dress. Meanwhile, outside on the patio, people challenged Darlins to corn hole with the unstoppable teams made of n.Icebox, Skunk-o-rella, Brawl Marx, and Sasha Haughtbich. However, a special note should be made that Spank Sinatra and Pink Mamba will not be allowed to challenge again if we want to keep the Darlins winning! Overall the evening was a success, full of smiles, laughter, dancing, and fundraising.

Coming hot off their nail-biting loss to the Minnesota RollerGirls, the Tampa Tantrums returned to the East Coast Extravaganza facing Montreal's New Skids on the Block. The Tantrums had lost by the slimmest of margins to Minnesota (2 points) whereas Montreal had previously taken Dominion to town (288-27). Montreal would do so again here, beating Tampa with a 140 point lead (197-57).

It's always hot at 10:00 a.m. on a July morning, but that didn't stop the Tampa Bay Derby Darlins and the SkatePlex rink staff from making it out for their 3rd consecutive year to celebrate Independence Day with the residents of Temple Terrace. This year's parade was a special event because it preceded the "Red, White, and Bruised" roller derby bout that evening. The parade is a great way to get out into the surrounding community and show them what derby is all about.
